Good Rain Bad Rain

Since we are a tropical country we are very used to the sun and it is so much a part of our lives, that it becomes quite difficult to go on without sunlight for days. And that happens when monsoon strikes. Days nights afternoons and evenings of sunless rain, continuous, monotonous, lugubrious rain wrecks a combination of havoc and fun on the lives of the common people (not the uncommonly poor ones- for them its only havoc). Oil consumption increases manifold since the continuous downpour demands that you spend the evenings with steaming tea and lots of fried stuff- various types of flakes, wafers, chops, cutlets and so on. And our evenings of course begin at 6 pm delaying dinner upto 10, 10:30.

The worst part of the rains is the smell it brings on to every Indian household. The washed clothes are never completely and desirably dried during the monsoon even if you put them into the washing machine dryer. They have to be dried under the fan which more or less manages to evaporate the water, but leaves a sour, disgusting smell on them that can only be gotten rid of with help from sunlight when it comes up. The one good thing is, our rains never go on for at a stretch for more than 3 days. The sun usually comes up as a breather on the 3rd or 4th day, giving us time to dry our clothes and then….of course, its time to make way for the Rains again.
