Fashionista
Finally Calcutta is all set to make its place in the world of fashion. So much so that the West Bengal state govt. has considered it their responsibility to organize a ‘khadi fashion show’ in here. Mr Manab Mukherjee the West Bengal Tourism Minister and Md Salim an ex MP, have organized an event which according to their press invitation letter will ‘contain catwalk and demonstration by…model groups’. We understand, we all understand that with their Siliguri Municipal election defeat, the Left Front has its back in the wall but even then, I do not see any justification whatsoever to father a farce and to invite the press to rip it off on newsprint the following day.
This fashion show, as they prefer to call it, is apparently an effort to bring the panting and shaking khadi weaving industry back to its feet. While the cause seems noble enough, an ignorant bystander like me is not free from the risk of assuming that it is an exercise to match the star studded activities displayed in recent times by Ms Mamata Banerjee, the opposition leader. Prasenjit Chatterjee the big boss of Tollywood will grace the show with his presence and since it is the season of austerity, Ms Locket Chatterjee will play the show-stopper (to save the Front some money).
The show will take place at Taanter Haat exhibition at Milon Mela - the fair ground off E M bypass, at the back of the ITC the Sonar hotel.
P.S. Believe it or not, I sincerely hope this works out. The Left Front needs it far more than the Khadi industry does.
