My City

By now you know that I live in an eastern province in India which is known by the name West Bengal and must be wondering why an ‘eastern’ province should be named of ‘west’ Bengal. Well its quite simple actually. Upto a point in history there was just one BENGAL. The same Bengal as in Royal Bengal Tiger and the language- Bengali.

Now  this very Bengal, a green moist place where torrential rains rain flood on plains and paddy fields adorn the countryside, was divided quite arbitrarily into two on the 15th of August 1947 (I won’t bore you with the whereabouts of Indian Partition and Independence). The eastern became Bangladesh and is  known colloquially known as East Bengal and the western part remained in India and is now West Bengal.

Kolkata, MY CITY is the most prominent city in West Bengal and what a city it is…..jam packed with people, slums and shopping malls, this is a place of the extremes. Those acquainted with Kolkata either love the city or leave it. You cannot stay here and stay neutral. The warm moist climate, the potholed and the butter smooth roads, the roadside junk food stalls and the Pizza Huts do not allow you the luxury of being neutral.

It is mandatory here in My City to take sides. And there are plenty of options to take sides of. The two safest sides that the city’s horizon offers are it culture and its food.
